Broad Street Market Applauds City Council for Allowing Brick Building Restoration to Move Forward

The Broad Street Market Alliance (“Market”) is grateful that City Council members voted this evening to reverse their prior rejection of the City’s selection of a construction manager to oversee reconstruction of the Brick Building, which was severely damaged in a fire last July. Tonight’s reversal means that restoration can now move forward and the building is back on track to be reopened in 2026.

“One of the hallmarks of leadership is the ability to change your mind when presented with new information,” said Eric Hagarty, Chair of the Market. “We applaud City Council for doing so following several productive conversations about their initial concerns, and an outpouring of support for the Market from the community. We are beyond grateful for all those who spoke out and showed up to express the urgency for getting this project underway. We also respect the concerns of those whose position remained unchanged. We hope the community remains engaged and energized as it relates to the myriad other issues facing Harrisburg, including gun violence, homelessness, and the need to bolster our education system so that we can continue to build a better community for everyone.”

Tonight’s vote builds momentum following last week’s opening of the new structure across from the Stone Building. The Market now consists of 24 amazing local businesses, a majority of which are minority-owned and/or women-owned, providing a diverse array of products for City of Harrisburg residents and the surrounding area.
